Some of you may have read my article on the “Orange Wednesday App Working on O2 iPhone“. Well, this is the second in the series.

I’ll start by reiterating; This isn’t a hack. It’s a simple work-around! No coding knowledge is required..

The “Film to Go” app gives users a promotional code which can be redeemed on iTunes (once per week, on a Thursday!) to download a specific film (chosen by Orange).

Orange Film To GoTo get the App, simply download it from the Apple App Store. Next, you’ll need to get an Orange phone number from a friend or family member (Preferably one without an iPhone, so they can’t take advantage of the offer anyway. In my case, my Mom!).

Enter the phone number into the app (More -> Settings -> Mobile Number). A few seconds later your friend/family memeber should receive a four character/digit code. Simply enter that into your app and you’re ready to go.

If you do this on a Thursday you’ll get a promo code right away, and you can go download/watch your film – May I suggest you invite your Orange-phone-number-mate round to watch it with you, you probably owe them one!

Since it’s launch in July 2006, Twitter has rapidly became a household name for almost any surfer (internet surfer that is!) as well as being constantly in the spotlight for breaking news, celebrity rants and thousands of web trends. The micro-blogging platform gets over 190,000,000 hits per month, and generates an estimated $400,000 per quarter! Now that’s “what’s happening”?!

A little birdy told me Twitter is changing. Re-designing. Evolving. It’s been speculated for some time, but last night (September 14th, 2010) Twitter began rolling out it’s brand new user interface to some of it’s users. The 141 strong employee team have been busy, producing not only a lovely looking interface but also an impressive video to demonstrate the new features. Check it out.

The re-design strategy, much like Facebook did in 2006, 2008 and 2010, is a smart move, keeping the top-dogs of the internet fresh and up-to-date. It’s a principle which I like to follow quite closely, re-designing this site quite often! (Could be less as my final year approaches!). Sure, some people will dislike the change, but such is life. You don’t see anyone moaning about Facebook’s latest interface like you did back when they rolled it out in February 2010!

Twitter’s new layout is very interactive. One could say it’s almost trying to resemble a certain mobile device application look and feel? Not that there is anything wrong with this (Just look at the success of the official Twitter App for iPhone!). The smooth glides and efficient persona exuded by the new website succeeds in giving users the concept of a well-oiled machine. A lovely development from the Twitter team.

So, after taking Saturday off to recover from Friday night’s leaving do, I got to work first thing Sunday morning on some application development trials. However, when I went to compile and run some projects I had previously worked on there was 1 build error, despite no flags being displayed in any of the project files.

The problem was a missing base SDK, the file required to debug and run the application. To fix this was relatively simple. Go to Project > Edit project settings > Build > Base SDK and change that value to iPhone Device 4.0. Next, go to the dropdown box in the top left corner in the main window and select ‘simulator’ below device. Also make sure that ‘Debug’ is selected over ‘Release’.

This should allow the project to run in the iPhone simulator, simulating iOS 4.0. Don’t forget however, that if you want full functionality for your app, it’s worth debugging on an older version of the OS too (I’m going back to 3.2 which is what Xcode recommends) in order to make sure it works across all platforms! It’s worth also mentioning that this issue should only occur with projects created before upgrading Xcode, as the new Xcode will point to the new SDK’s by default, where as older projects will still be looking for the old (now non-existant 3.1.3). Now all I have to do is build this killer app!

I was talking this morning to my boss about iPhone app development, and some cool ideas emerged. One of the ideas I had was a batch/bulk uploader for facebook photos strait from the iPhone, as opposed to one by one uploading.

It appears that this app already exists, and is called iLoader. It cost’s £1.19 and is pretty awesome. There is also a lite version of the app, but I went strait in with the pro version.

You log into facebook, select the photos or videos, then select a folder to upload to (better than the automatic mobile upload folder that facebook creates) and then they all upload simultaneously, showing upload speed and completed percent.

Never spend hours uploading photo after photo using the facebook app again! It’s just helped me reach my second mobile uploads folder on Facebook!

The best game on the iPhone I think is ‘Orbital’.

It’s a brick-breaker styled game, shooting from the bottom of the screen like in bejewelled. The graphics are great, not to mention the simplistic yet addictive game play which makes for a unique experience.

It’s all about shooting circles and watching them grow as you blast other circles at them, consequently blowing them up! Each circle that explodes is a point. My highest score is (currently) 34 although I’m intending on improving it this Friday on the train down to London.

You can try it out at http://www.orbital-game.com/ but for £0.59 you can play it for hours on the iPhone, and it looks and feels even more amazing!

As you may have read in my previous post there are a number of factors Orange are using to influence customers.

An application entitled ‘Orange Wednesdays’ has recently been released, allowing Orange users to get there discount code via the app. Now, I’m on O2, so don’t have this option… Or do I?

Yesterday I started testing the application to see if a work-around could be found, with success. By typing in an Orange number into the ‘Phone-number’ field, it sends a validation email containing a 4 digit PIN to that phone. If you then type that PIN into the confirmation field you can request and successfully receive Orange Wednesday discount codes on your O2 iPhone, while the Orange mobile receives a text confirming the code too.

I know this is no more advanced than getting someone with an Orange phone to forward on the message, but it’s much, much easier and less hassle too!
